Introducing Pastor Dretha Burris

On January 3rd, 2020 - Community UMC will welcome Pastor Dretha Burris to be our new Senior Pastor. Pastor Nathan Presley, who has served with us since October 2019, will be moving to take on an associate pastor position at FUMC Rowlett. 

Below is a short biography of Pastor Dretha. We invite you to share our excitement to welcome her to our community on January 3rd at 11:00 Am. In-person, Online, or in the parking lot. There will be a short "Get to know you" following the services. 


Dretha Burris is passionate about ministry. She believes that her role, as well as the role of the church, is to do 3 things – first and foremost to point people to Jesus Christ, second, to bring up the next generation of new Christians at any age, and third, the community should be a better place because the church is in it. Pastor Dretha spent 31 years in public education in a variety of positions - secretary, teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and principal. Pastor Dretha is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has specialized in working with adolescents/children, families, and geriatrics. She has experience with Children's Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Adult Discipleship, pastoral care, pastoral counseling, missions, outreach, and worship.


Pastor Dretha has serves on the Commission of Archives and History for the North Texas Conference. Pastor Dretha is one of the members of the North Texas Conference Congregational, Assessment, Response, and Transformations teams (CART) for Crisis and also participates in the CART Team for Conflict. She also serves on the District Committee on Ordained Ministry for the North Central District of the North Texas Conference.


In addition to her work in ministry, Pastor Dretha believes in community involvement and serves as the Chaplain for the Rowlett Citizens Corps Council. This organization includes the East Texas Community Emergency Response Team in our area. She serves on the board of Operation Community Outreach, an ecumenical charity. She has a history of participation in community organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, site-based decision-making teams for local schools, and a Pastoral Alliance.


Pastor Dretha has two adult married daughters Sherry Roeder (Nick) and Andrea Boyce (Shane). She has a granddaughter named Brighton and a grandson named Samuel who will arrive in 2021. Pastor Dretha lives in Josephine and has a deep desire to be involved in the community. She is very excited about serving alongside the congregation at Community UMC!
